Emergent Church Refutation
By David Cox

The problem is that the Emergent Church is just wrong. If you are going to believe the Bible at all, if you are going to accept Jesus as your Savior, then you are going to have to accept that information on some basis. That basis is on the authority of the Word of God, the Scriptures, the Bible. If the Bible is true, then it has the divine authority of God, and anything against or contradicts the Bible is false and to be rejected.

This is a matter that the Emergent Church lays the foundation of man’s pleasure over and above God’s authoritative Word (which securely expresses God’s will). This is the most clear way to see this issue, and if so, then we must side with God against man’s ideas no matter how we “feel” about them. If we distrust the Bible, then nothing we know about God is true. Yet there is no reason to distrust the Bible because everything it has and does tell us is right on.

Affirm the authority of God’s Word

We must affirm and defend God’s Word.

Jude 1:3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

That faith (Christianity) that God has given us, is “once delivered unto the saints”. In other words, the body of it is definite, definitely given, and there is no needs to go wandering about trying to find what is right, effective, or efficient. We already have it given in the Apostle’s doctrine.

Secondly, we have to defend that position given to us in God’s Word, and not accept any other doctrine, gospel, or methodology of doing God’s work.

Understand the Power of God’s Way

2Tim 3:3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 2Tim 3:4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 2Tim 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

There is a reality underlying all of this. That reality is that ONLY the true Gospel, and the true work of God (the church done the biblical way) is what will give spiritual power. This power 1) transforms lives so that sinful men and women become holy. 2) The things that these transformed Christians do in the name of God, and under the work of God (the church done the biblical way) will achieve miracles of saved and holy lives.

Understand the Danger of the Emergent Church

2Tim 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

1Tim 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

This movement is of the devil and his cohorts. “How can you say that?” Simply because it points and moves people away from God’s Word and into a position where they deify their own desires (carnality).

Sound doctrine is the apostle’s doctrine. This is what the Emergent Church leaders and followers cannot put up with (cannot “endure”). They have to change off of that biblical position to humanistic reasoning.

Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

1Thess 5:21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

The early church and biblical Christians well know how to verify true doctrine and practice from false, by examining everything in the light of the Word of God, and what doesn’t check with Bible, we discard it.
